Ask what vitamins are in sea moss and you will get one of two answers: a specific and impressive number, or a vague gesture at everything the body needs. The specific number is wrong and the vague gesture is unhelpful, so here is the actual composition, with the sizes of the amounts included.
Start with the claim that needs retiring
“Sea moss contains 92 of the 102 minerals the human body needs.”
This appears on more sea moss packaging than any other statement, and it fails on three separate counts:
- The body does not need 102 minerals. The essential mineral list runs to roughly two dozen — the macrominerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium and phosphorus, and trace elements such as iron, zinc, iodine, selenium, copper, manganese and a few others. No nutritional framework produces 102.
- There is no analytical study behind the number. It traces to Dr Sebi’s teaching, not to any published composition analysis of Chondrus crispus or Eucheuma cottonii.
- Detectable is not nutritionally meaningful. Modern instruments detect elements at parts per billion. Seaweed grown in seawater will show traces of a great many things. That is a statement about analytical sensitivity, not about dietary contribution.
A supplement label is supposed to tell you how much of something you are getting. “92 minerals” tells you how many things were detectable, which is a different question and not a useful one.

What analytical studies actually find
Published composition work on Chondrus crispus consistently identifies:
- Minerals — calcium, iron and zinc among them, plus iodine
- Amino acids — the protein content is low but the profile is reasonably complete
- Fatty acids — small quantities, including some omega-3
- Carotenoids — pigments with antioxidant activity
- Polyphenols — likewise
- Polysaccharides — principally carrageenan, the soluble fibre that makes the gel set
Everything on that list is genuinely present. The question the marketing never answers is how much, and that is where the picture changes.
The dilution problem
Sea moss gel is roughly 95% water. Dried sea moss is nutrient-dense; gel is dried sea moss with most of a jar of water added.
So a two-tablespoon serving of gel contains perhaps a couple of grams of actual seaweed. Whatever the concentration in the dried material, the serving delivers a small fraction of it. For iodine that still matters, because iodine is potent at microgram scale. For calcium, iron and zinc — needed in milligrams — it mostly does not.
The two nutrients that genuinely count
Iodine
The one nutrient where sea moss is unambiguously a significant dietary source, and the one that requires respect.
A 2020 risk assessment published in Environmental Science and Pollution Research, analysing 30 samples of red seaweeds, found iodine in Chondrus crispus averaging around 3.86 mg/kg dry weight, with a standard deviation of ±1.49 mg/kg — roughly 3 to 7 micrograms per gram of dried seaweed.
The adult Tolerable Upper Intake Level is 1,100 micrograms a day. Ordinary servings sit comfortably inside that. The important figure is the standard deviation, which is close to 40% of the mean: batches vary a great deal, which is why a stated iodine content and per-lot testing matter more than any origin story.
Iodine also carries a U-shaped risk curve — deficiency and excess both cause thyroid dysfunction. Sea moss and thyroid health covers what that means in practice.
Soluble fibre
The most useful constituent and the least promoted. Carrageenan and related polysaccharides absorb water, add bulk, slow gastric emptying and feed gut bacteria.
This is also where the human evidence sits. Of the two small randomised controlled trials of Chondrus crispus — each under 60 adults, each under 12 weeks — one reported improved stool frequency and the literature reported modest reductions in fasting glucose, both consistent with soluble fibre doing ordinary fibre things.
What about vitamins specifically?
Worth separating, because the question is usually asked about vitamins and answered about minerals.
Sea moss is not a notable source of most vitamins. It contains carotenoids, some of which have provitamin A activity, and small quantities of B vitamins and vitamin C — though vitamin C degrades substantially during drying and storage, so dried sea moss is a poor source of it whatever the fresh seaweed contained.
If you are looking for a vitamin source, sea moss is not it. Its contribution is fibre, iodine, and a modest set of minerals and antioxidant compounds.
The thing composition lists never mention
Seaweed absorbs what surrounds it — and that includes the elements you do not want. Arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury accumulate in seaweed from the water it grew in. Research published in 2025 in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Research found that seaweed consumption can lead to heavy metal accumulation with real consequences, including kidney dysfunction and neurological effects.
This is the honest counterweight to the mineral marketing. The same property that lets sea moss concentrate useful trace elements lets it concentrate harmful ones. It is entirely manageable — buy from a supplier who tests each lot and shows the certificate — but it should be part of any serious discussion of what is in sea moss, and it almost never is.
It is also why the detox claim is backwards. A plant that accumulates metals is not removing them from you.
An honest summary you could put on a label
If we had to write the panel ourselves:
- A good source of soluble fibre and iodine.
- Contains small amounts of calcium, iron, zinc, amino acids, fatty acids, carotenoids and polyphenols.
- Not a significant source of most vitamins.
- Iodine varies between batches — check the certificate of analysis for the lot.
- Human evidence is limited to two small trials showing modest effects on fasting glucose, stool frequency and antioxidant capacity.
Less exciting than 92 minerals. Considerably more useful, and every line of it is defensible if someone asks you to prove it.
