Caribbean Sea Moss Varieties

Colour comes from the species and where it grows, not from any treatment. Here is what separates gold, purple, green and mixed full-spectrum.

Sea moss is not one plant. The material sold under that name across the Caribbean covers several species, and the colour you see is a product of species and growing conditions rather than processing. None of ours is dyed, bleached or colour-corrected.

Gold

The market favourite and the safest starting point. Mild in taste and smell, with a smooth, neutral-coloured gel that disappears into almost any product. If your customers are new to sea moss, gold gives them the least to object to.

Purple

Denser, with a thicker gel and a colour that comes from anthocyanins — the same family of compounds that colours blackcurrants and red cabbage. That gives antioxidant-focused brands a straightforward story to tell, without overstating what the compound does.

Green

Less common on shelves, which is exactly why some brands choose it. Fresh and mildly marine, with a pale green gel that makes a product line visibly different from everything around it.

Mixed Full-Spectrum

A natural blend of colours as harvested, rather than a deliberate recipe. Cost-effective at volume for gel production where the final colour is not critical, because nothing is sorted out.

Which Should You Order?

  • First order, unsure: gold.
  • Antioxidant positioning: purple.
  • A visibly different range: green.
  • High-volume gel, colour not critical: mixed full-spectrum.
